The Participatory Guarantee System Organic Council, PGSOC, was set up in 2006 to enhance India's organic movement through harmonization of common guarantee systems at grassroots organizations and farmer groups. It is a participatory, community-owned organic verification system based on trust, increasing market access for small and marginal farmers for food security, sustainable livelihoods, agroecological works, and environment conservation. Facilitated by grassroots member organizations across the country, PGSOC assists groups of five or more organic farmers at the local level with registration, taking a pledge, holding regular meetings, and undergoing peer appraisals. These groups, upon fulfilling the norms, get referred for certification and are eligible to use the PGS Organic label. PGSOC is a registered society in Goa and a member of IFOAM - Organics International and IFOAM Asia.
